About Me

I graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1993 with a degree in Elementary Education and moved to Japan for almost two years to teach ESL. I graduated from Castleton State College in Vermont with a Master's Degree in Special Education in 1997 and was a Special Education teacher at Schuylerville Elementary School for five years. However, after starting a family of my own, I wanted to move back to the area where I grew up. I have three young children of my own and I thoroughly enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities. I feel that my enthusiasm, patience, personality and style are particularly suited for motivating and encouraging younger learners and that my experience as a Special Education teacher has made me capable of meeting the needs of diverse learners in a Regular classroom.

About My Classroom

What is a typical day like in first grade? When all of the children come in they have the opportunity to play with a variety of learning centers. At some point in the day we have Daily Meeting where the children learn important concepts such as calendar, graphing, money, counting, patterns and place value. Our reading program is a big part of our day. The children participate in blending, phonemic awareness activities, dictaion, blending and workshop. During workshop, our reading teachers come to the classroom and we are able to break into small groups for more individual time. Throughout the reading block of time, the children will be learning Consonant sounds (including blends), Short and Long vowel sounds (including diphthongs and digraphs), About 250 sight words, Vocabulary, How to Read with expression and fluency, Several Reading Comprehension strategiesThis year we have a new math program. They use several activites, games and manipualtives to teach a variety of math concepts. The children eat lunch in the cafeteria and in the classroom on Fridays. We go oustside for recess almost everyday, even in the winter. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. If the weather is rainy or below 20 degrees, the children get a few minutes of indoor play time. Every day the children also have one "Special" class (Art, Music Gym, Library). Please make sure your child has sneakers on gym days. In first grade we also work on penmanship and process writing. Spelling starts later in the year. How can parents help at home? Read to your child Listen to your child read Point out familiar words Practice sight words and decodable books Build Independence Count and Problem Solve aloud
